long live form: the black composition diary note #3
It’s an experimental book that won’t come off as experimental. The experiments are only visible if you’re looking hard for them.
At almost three chapters in—of a four-chapter book—I can say it’s getting both clearer to me what it is and also harder to define in conventional language. First, the easy part and my go-to response to what the book is about: Black music-making, that some people call jazz. This is intentionally vague and would not get you closer to the things that are happening in the book.
